Life Update: What's New With Me?

Life Update: What's New With Me?

Fun's over, what's next?

Last Sunday around this time I was getting back from a 10-day trip to Nashville and Austin. I was seeing my friend Isaac in Nashville, and then spending some time exploring the University of Texas campus and surrounding area with my sister the following weekend. It was a blast, and really nice to get out of shitty Chicago weather for a bit. But there were some unforeseen expenses while I was away, and checking the bank account upon arriving back came with a rude awakening. Playtime was over; I needed to make some cheddar.

I had already started looking for work—I even landed a couple freelance writing jobs—but the past week or so has brought a bit more urgency to figure out my long-term plan.

A lot of people have the same question for me when I see them after coming back from my trip. What the hell do I do all day with no job? And what's my plan for the future? Well, I'm still figuring that last part out, but I'm getting there.

As far as what I do with my time, I've found several ways to keep busy. First off, if you saw my LinkedIn update, you'll know that I've started freelance writing for SB Nation—an online collection of sports blogs & communities. Specifically, I've been writing for Big East Coast Bias and BT Powerhouse, their Big East and Big Ten blogs, respectively. This has been a great way to spend my time because as many of you know I'm a BIG college basketball fan, and I've been trying to keep up with writing in some form. It's been a fun new challenge and shows my versatility for prospective jobs, plus you never know where these things might lead.

You can follow my writing (and other random CBB updates) on my Twitter here, if you'd like. I'm also in the market for more freelance writing while I find a full-time gig, so if you know anyone looking for a writer for pretty much anything, hit me up ;)

So yeah, I'm deep in the world of college basketball at the moment; it's March after all! But while this has taken up a good chunk of my time, I've also been doing DoorDash to make some extra money on the side. And of course, it's been great seeing all my Chicago friends and hanging out with family. I've started to relearn piano too; I'm not very good at it but I'm having a good time. Also, I've been doing my best to keep up with my Keep, Stop, Start list that I created after my trip

Long term, I'm looking at non-profit jobs in Denver and Chicago. There seems to be a decent market for marketing/communications type roles, which would be a good way for me to transition, given my previous experience.

That's about all I have for now; just wanted to get this out there in case anyone was curious. Happy March!

  1. I am enjoying your sports writing and am 100% sure that there is a nonprofit agency out there that would benefit from your skillset. Way to keep chasing the threads that interest you as I am sure they will lead to what you are looking for.
